Paint on Windows 11 now has a one-click Remove background button. No downloads. No installs. It works on the whole canvas or inside a selection you draw first. Save as PNG when you are done. Nothing else keeps the transparent areas.
The Remove Background Button in Windows 11 Paint
Microsoft added a dedicated Remove background button to Paint in Windows 11. It first rolled out to Windows Insiders in September 2023 with Paint version 11.2306.30.0, then reached everyone. The button sits in the Image section of the toolbar, near the top of the window. It is clearly labelled.
Windows 10 Paint does not have this feature. If you are still on Windows 10, you need another method. Paint 3D had a Magic Select tool, but Microsoft deprecated it and removed it from the Microsoft Store in November 2024. For most Windows 11 users, the built-in Paint background remover is the simplest option.
How to Use the One-Click Background Remover
Full Canvas or Rectangle Selection
The tool works two ways. Click the button with nothing selected and it processes the whole canvas. Draw a rectangle first and it only removes the background inside that area.
- Open your image in Paint on Windows 11.
- To limit the effect, use the Select tool to draw a rectangle around the area you want to process. Skip this and the button works on everything.
- Click the Remove background button in the Image section of the toolbar.
- Paint detects the subject and removes the background, leaving a checkerboard pattern to show transparency.
The result is not always perfect. It works well for many images.
Using Selections for More Control
Automatic removal gets things wrong. When the subject is small or the image has multiple objects, draw a rectangle selection before clicking the button.
Click the Select tool in the toolbar, then drag on the canvas to draw a rectangle around the area you want to keep or remove. Click Remove background. Paint only processes inside that rectangle. The rest of the image stays untouched.
The selection is rectangular. If your subject is not, you may need multiple selections or manual cleanup afterwards.
Saving as PNG to Keep Transparency
After removing the background, save the image in a format that supports transparency. That format is PNG. Save as JPG and the transparent areas fill with white. That defeats the purpose.
To save correctly:
- Go to File > Save As, or press Ctrl+S and choose a new name.
- In the Save as type dropdown, select PNG.
- Name the file and click Save.
That single step preserves the transparent background. Open a JPG elsewhere and the checkerboard pattern becomes solid white.
Limitations of the Automatic Tool
The built-in Paint background remover works for simple images. It struggles with hair, low-contrast edges, and transparent objects such as glass. Wispy hair or a subject that blends into the background produces rough edges or missing parts.
For edges Paint gets wrong, you have options. Try a different selection. Adjust the image before removal. Or switch to a dedicated AI background remover. A dedicated tool gives cleaner results for complex subjects.
When to Use a Dedicated Background Remover
Do not settle for a poor cutout. Many online services and apps are built for background removal. Removebg.sh handles difficult edges better than a simple one-click tool.
For most basic images, the Windows 11 Paint button does the job. For a clean cutout of a person with detailed hair or a transparent object, a dedicated background remover earns its keep. You can also do manual cleanup in Paint with the eraser tool after removal, but that is slow and imprecise.
Manual Cleanup in Paint
Fixing Leftover Pixels
Automatic removal sometimes leaves extra background or cuts off part of your subject. You can fix it with the eraser tool. The eraser in Paint works on the current layer and replaces the area with the background colour, not transparency, unless you are careful.
Undo and Try a Different Selection
A better approach: make a selection before removal. If the automatic result is still wrong, undo with Ctrl+Z and try a different selection. For fine details, zoom in and use the eraser with a small size. This is tedious. It can improve the result for simple images.
The one-click button is the main feature. Manual cleanup is only necessary when the automatic result is noticeably wrong.
